The pop culture and entertainment worlds are reeling today from the news that two of the previous generations icons - Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson both died on the same day.

We had expected Fawcett to sadly pass soon with news of her grave cancer situation being public for months.

But the Michael Jackson news came as a shock. Lennon and Princess Di level shock. This will be one were talking about for days.

And where did the news first break of the Jackson cardiac arrest and immediate death?

Online at TMZ and Twitter. Not sure how TMZ manages to scoop every major news organization on a story this big. But they do. Partly balls. Partly very good sources.

When your calling news of an icons death that early - you have to be right. Much of a news organizations reputation depends on it. If TMZ would have gotten it wrong - the major media companies would have been the first to call them on it.

It would still be a couple hours later when AP, followed by CNN decided to announce that Jackson had passed.

Bolt’s first stop in Toronto was the Festival kick-off party at the top of the city - Toronto’s CN Tower.

Bolt’s visit to the city is highly anticipated by fans, media and especially the autograph hounds who have been eyeing those beautiful Olympic gold medal winning shots knowing what a great and valuable addition an autograph would be.

And how was Bolt upon airport arrival and attending the CN Tower party?

Usain did sign a few autographs here and there. It seemed very tough for a collector to have gotten more then one signature from him.

Bolt’s still got a few days left in Toronto till the big race day on Thursday where you can see arguably one of the most famous athletes in the world today do his thing.

HoundsTV: Toronto's Starz Animation and Elton John get 23 million dollar Ontario Government handout to make toons
TORONTO (HoundsTV) May 26, 2009
- In Toronto for the first of two highly-anticipated concerts with Billy Joel - Elton John found time to stop by STARZ Animation studios and greet Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.

The occasion was to announce to the large gathering of entertainment news media (each of which was announcing they had they own “exclusive” interview with Sir Elton) that Starz Animation had managed to squeeze a cool 23 million bucks out of McGuinty’s Ontario government and one of the first animation projects Starz will tackle is a toon from Elton John and David Furnish’s Rocket Pictures’ - Gnomeo & Juliet.

Good thing Premier McGuinty is an Elton fan and did mention to HoundsTV cameras on his way into the event his favorite Elton song is “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” (though, he politely declined to sing a few bars.)

While Elton and the Starz crew were certainly in the taking mood today - unfortunately, they didn’t seem much in the giving mood - with media accreditation for HoundsTV to the press conference or with Elton giving autographs to the few collectors that were waiting outside the event.

On arrival, Elton took one look at the small group of autograph collectors assembled and mumbled, “Nope! Your ebay guys.” - and quickly made his way into the Richmond St. Toronto studio.

UPDATE: It seems Sir Elton did have a little “give” in him today - and signed at least one autograph.

(HoundsTV) CNN Larry King in Toronto for book talk and autographs
TORONTO (HoundsTV) May 22, 2009 - CNN interviewing legend Larry King was in Toronto for the day making the rounds and pimpin’ his autobiographical book - My Remarkable Journey.

There was a surprisingly large group of autograph seekers out after King today - looking to get their books and photographs signed by the CNN legend - whose notable accomplishments include interviewing more then 40,000 media personalities and seven marriages. King is showing no signs of slowing down as he is signed to CNN through 2011 at an annual salary of almost 10 million dollars.

When HoundsTV asked one professional autograph collector, “What’s the big deal about Larry King’s autograph?” (after all, he isn’t an accomplished actor or musician - the usual targets for mass autograph collecting crowds - the collector simply replied, “He’s old and will probably die soon.”

Bruce Springsteen arrives at private Toronto airfield for ACC show - some very astute autograph collectors manage to bag the boss

May 12th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Richard

HoundsTV: Bruce Springsteen autographs album for fans at Toronto airport

Bruce Springsteen and his E Street band recently hit Toronto, Canada on their current tour and if anybody should wonder the lengths a fan would have to go to get Springsteen’s autograph please read on…

We all know how touchy Springsteen gets with the sale of his concert tickets - you can only imagine how much he hates the thought of his signature being sold. Because of that, Springsteen does not often sign autographs, rarely in large crowds, usually personalizes, and when he chooses to sign - he tries to make damn sure he is not signing for collectors that might go on to sell his autograph.

Since the BOSS was arriving just hours before the Toronto Air Canada Centre concert - and was heading straight back to the airfield immediately following the show - the opportunities for fan interaction on this trip was going to be next to nil. The only real shot would be at a remote private airfield just north of Toronto where Bruce and the band was set to land just a few hours before the ACC show.

So our dedicated autograph collector and a few friends, aware of the place where Springsteen was set to arrive, headed out to the airport in the hopes of getting a few albums signed.

The smallish plane arrives and Springsteen is first off and sits in the front passenger seat of a car as the rest of his seven vehicle entourage get ready to make the thirty minute drive to the Air Canada Centre. As Springsteen waits in the idling car, it is then our small group of collectors approach - people in the same car as Bruce are quick to shout, “no autographs. no signing.”

But Springsteen rolls the car window down and mutters a “oh, you found me” and motions to the small gaggle of people to come over to his window where he preceded to sign a strict one autograph per person.

One female fan, clutching tightly her just signed Darkness on the Edge of Town album, couldn’t also resist asking Springsteen if he had any extra tickets to tonight’s sold-out show - Springsteen, not missing a beat replied, “what do you think, I carry them in my back pocket?”

The window rolled back up and the Springsteen-led line of cars and vans headed to the Toronto venue for the show.

Billy Bob Thornton not used to real journalists? Globe and Mail admits we all pander to celebs occasionally to get the interview

April 17th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Richard

Billy Bob Thornton the day after his CBC radio interview
Leave it to The Globe and Mail to put the whole Billy Bob Thornton interview kerfuffle into a better perspective. Russell Smith gets down to what this whole thing was really about in Billy Bob’s tantrum raises new questions - and its not whether Billy Bob had any sort of meltdown. What celebrity isn’t a little crazy. This thing has always been about some of the publicists perceived grasp on the messaging machine. Writes Smith:

“Thornton was obviously under a misconception about the kind of broadcaster (CBC) he had agreed to work with. He’s a guy who is used to dictating terms to the media. His publicists no doubt don’t really think of the media as media at all, but as a branch of the marketing department. ” - RUSSELL SMITH

But we would maybe argue with Smith’s stance that Billy Bob is just best known for being a “celebrity.” Actually, Billy Bob has often been the furthest thing from a typical Hollywood celeb. You can’t deny the guy has done some quality movie parts. Mm-hmm.
