Where in the world is Mats Sundin? The Canucks arrive in Toronto but Mats avoids the media and autograph hounds at the hotel

Where's Mats Sundin

TORONTO (HoundsTV) Feb 20, 2009 – The day had finally come. It was the weekend that hockey fans and Toronto media had circled on their calendar for months.

The weekend that Mats Sundin would come back to Toronto and face the Leafs.

On a frigid Friday afternoon in Toronto, media and autograph hounds were patiently staking out the downtown hotel the Vancouver Canucks were scheduled to check in at.

Everybody wanted that first shot of Mats coming back.

HoundsTV was certainly excited about getting a chance at a good shot. It was a photo Toronto media wanted real bad – and would have paid a good buck for. I even had my shot all planned out – nothing was going to get in front of me as I shoot Sundin just as he steps off the bus. I could already see in my head the headline being printed in bold text across the shot – “Mats is back”

There was just one problem. The shot never came. Mats never got off the bus.

Probably anticipating the media attention that was going to be at the hotel for his return – a suddenly shy Sundin found another means of transportation into the city.

So we ask tonight. Where in the world (well actually… Toronto) is Mats Sundin?

Where's Mats Sundin?

UPDATE:

Seems we’re not the only ones asking where’s Sundin (which it turns out, Sundin skipped the team bus and was driven to his old north Toronto house which he still owns.) The Scrawler, Toronto Sun’s Joe Warmington shares some strong thoughts (with a little help from yours truly) on Mr. Sundin’s eagerly awaited return:

“I really wasn’t sure how he would react when I embarked to go out and find him last night but I didn’t think he would hide, since this city was pretty good to him — and the bank in which he deposits all his cash.” – Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun

  1. Nissan says:

Mats Sundin was class act for the entire time he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The media turn to quick.

  2. LeafNationFan says:

What did Mats Sundin really ever do for the Leafs in his 13 years here. Win a cup? Elevate the team to win a series? make the players around him better? Doug Gilmour did those things.

Got something to add to the story?
