Comedian Stephen Colbert made his long promised journey to Vancouver to record segments for his popular Colbert Report television show.

Colbert jumped on the Olympic Winter Games bandwagon when he got word that the U.S. Speed Skating team had lost their major sponsor – a bank that caught up in the recent American financial squeeze.

Colbert, through pleas on his Colbert Robert program raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to ensure the Speed Skating team got a smooth ride to the Vancouver Games.

Colbert would follow the team to Vancouver to tape some segments for his show. Of course, since the Colbert Report and it’s network – Comedy Central are not official Olympic broadcast partners – Colbert played up the fact that he would not be legally able to use Olympic affiliated words like “Olympics,” “Winter Games, ” or “Vancouver 2010″ so Colbert titled his reporting;

“The Colbert Report Exclusive Vancouverage of the 2010 Quadrennial Cold Weather Athletic Competition.”

More than 4,000 rowdy fans crowded Vancouver’s Creekside Park for taping of the Colbert Report which also featured guests like Canadian crooner Michael Buble and American Gold medalist Lindsey Vonn.

Among the thousands of fans that showed up to greet Stephen Colbert in Vancouver – a few were dedicated autograph collectors. Our friend in Vancouver, CanadaGraphs, was very eager to greet Colbert. CG blogged about the Colbert experience:

The first day Mr. Colbert showed up at about 10:15 AM, being driven in a tinted out minivan. Security drove him up as close to the walkway they had constructed as they could. Still being 50 or so feet away, Colbert had to walk thru a swarm of fans, overzealous security & of course 5-8 autograph hounds. Not once did Stephen seem bothered by the near mob like situation, happily signing & walking, signing some more, walking some more. He was clearly a class act.” – CANADAGRAPHS
