Guarding TOM CRUISE – a celebrity bodyguard does his job well in Toronto

Guarding Tom Cruise in Toronto
The gushing continues about how nice Tom Cruise was during his recent visit to Toronto, Canada to talk about his new movie Valkyrie and a lot more.

It was rare to see an A-list star take so much time talking with fans, signing autographs, and posing for photos. And all that “crowd time” certainly does present a challenge for security – namely one in particular, Cruise’s own private bodyguard. Never far from Tom’s side, Cruise’s personal bodyguard was seen – but rarely heard from in Toronto.

He seemed to know how to do his job very well – guarding Tom and making sure all is safe. But at the same time making it appear there isn’t a wall of intimidating security around Tom and fans get the opportunity to meet Cruise up-close.

It’s not like Tom’s bodyguard won’t tell you how it is. This video from New York a few weeks back shows Tom’s guy is certainly willing to get into it.

  1. Protecting celebrities can be very taxing on the bodyguard. You have to let your “client” mingle with the crowd, but at the same time we know that there are some very unstable people out there who may want to harm your client.

This is why at times you see a bodyguard over-react; too many people to close to the client, and not enough guards. When you feel you are being cornered and it’s your responsibility to provide the protection, your response will be fear based.

The training standards for the industry have changed dramatically over the past 8-10 years.
These days we are looking for individual who can think on their feet, speak several languages, and yes, depending on the location you will be working, we also look for individuals who have excellent driving skills and can use a firearm.
