Mickey Rourke has picked up some serious acting award buzz for his portrayal of washed-up wrestling star “The Ram” in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler.

Aronofsky has talked in a few interviews that the real idea for his movie – what really got him writing to the heart of Rourke’s character – was when he was visiting ex-wrestlers at various autographs shows.

“So that’s when we started to go to these independent shows, and saw some of the old-timers — Nikolai Volkov and Jimmy Superfly Snuka and Rocky Johnson,” recalls Aronofsky. “Then I went to a few autograph signings and saw kind of how desperate that world was. There was a lot of sadness but there was also a lot of humor among these guys.” – Director Darren Aronofsky
